His first horse, OUR GIRL, was a winner - the thrill instilled in him a life-long love of racing and involvement with horses. John, as a teenager, trained the mare along Semaphore Beach in South Australia. She went on to win 5 races including 2 city Saturday events and her progeny includes NEAPOLI BOY who won an amazing 31 races.
The Bloodstock consultant was the Manager for NSW of Dalgety Bloodstock from 1977. He branched out on his own in 1979 to form John Brown Bloodstock.
His philosophy in selecting competitive horses is to focus on their positive attributes and plan their course to becoming a successful athlete.
"It does not matter if the horse is priced at two thousand dollars or two million dollars," said John. "I select them based on their winning potential, conformation, pedigree, track history and most importantly quality, presence and attitude. I must be able to see Group One winner in them."
Group One Stakes winners have been purchased for as low as $2,400 - namely SPANISH MIX. She went on to win $590,060.
Successes and Highlights
John Brown was selected twice to represent the nation's bloodstock industry on official Australian Government trade missions to Europe and the Middle East.
He was instrumental in bringing His Excellency Nasser Lootah from Dubai, UAE to invest in Australian Racing - the first from the region. His Excellency bought Emirates Park on John Brown's advice and appointed him the managing director of the property. Lootah's breeding facility and large stable of racehorses injected more than $200 million into the Australian economy.
Breeding Successes
John selected the initial matings for Emirates Park that produced stakes winners such as DARBAAS, BRAVE WARRIOR, AL FAARIS, BUNDLE OF THANKS and purchased COSSACK WARRIOR as the foundation sire.

John Brown relies on careful research and good judgment when choosing horses. A trusted confidant and advisor to, Australia’s premier trainer for 35 years, T.J. Smith and his stable manager / brother Ernie Smith.
One of the champion horses John selected for the Tulloch Lodge pair was Golden Slipper winner and Champion 2YO racehorse of his year and sire STAR WATCH.
